In late 2005, a terrible earthquake devastated northern Pakistan, killing more than 75,000 people and seriously injuring far more. Balakot was ground zero.  A thriving city of 30,000 was completely flattened.  The death toll was heartbreaking.  People have been returning, but the threat of additional earthquakes has caused the Pakistani government to consider closing the whole valley. A child brushes his teeth outside the refugee camp.
